NANS endorses Tax Reform Law, calling it a well-intentioned policy designed to boost Nigeria’s economy and protect low-income earners. The National Association of Nigerian Students announced its support following the maiden Expanded National Executive Council (ENEC) meeting on the law on Saturday.
The ENEC meeting, themed “National Executive Council and Structural Stakeholders’ Forum 2026 on the Tax Reform Act,” brought together student leaders, policy experts, and key stakeholders, including representatives from NAUS, NAPS, NANCES, zonal coordinators, and female student associations.
Earlier, NANS had threatened nationwide protests if implementation of the law was not paused. However, extensive engagements with the National Assembly, DSS, and the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), alongside clarification from the published investigation report, convinced student leaders of the law’s objectives and safeguards.
ENEC Chairman and NANS President, Comr. Olushola Oladoja, said students were satisfied with the explanations provided by tax experts, noting that the forum clarified all grey areas and reinforced confidence in the reform.
The council resolved that the law improves revenue generation, ensures fairness in taxation, and strengthens social protection for vulnerable citizens. It requires higher-income earners to contribute more equitably while safeguarding low-income groups. Following this, NANS canceled the planned January 14 nationwide protest.
In addition, NANS pledged to serve as ambassadors of public enlightenment, educating Nigerians about the law’s purpose and benefits to enhance public confidence during implementation. The council also passed a vote of confidence on former FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji and commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his fiscal reforms and the NELFUND initiative, reaffirming support for the administration’s economic transformation agenda.
The decision marks a significant collaboration between student bodies and government agencies, highlighting NANS’ role in shaping public understanding of fiscal policy and contributing to national development.
