Taiwan Strait Transit activity intensified Wednesday as a U.S. Navy surveillance aircraft flew through the strategically sensitive waterway just weeks before Donald Trump is expected to visit China.
The aircraft, a Boeing P‑8A Poseidon, traveled through the Taiwan Strait in what the United States Seventh Fleet described as international airspace.
In a statement, the fleet said the flight demonstrates Washington’s commitment to maintaining a “free and open Indo-Pacific.” U.S. officials also stressed that operating in the strait aligns with international law and protects the navigational rights of all nations.
The flight comes as diplomatic preparations continue for Trump’s planned trip to China, where both governments hope to ease tensions that have strained relations in recent years. Disputes over Taiwan, trade policies, and technology restrictions remain major points of friction between Washington and Beijing.
Chinese forces closely monitored the operation. According to reports cited by the state-linked Global Times, Chinese naval and air units tracked the aircraft and conducted alert operations during the transit. The report said the Chinese military “effectively handled the situation.”
Military passages through the strait occur regularly but frequently trigger protests from Beijing. The United States considers the waterway an international route, allowing freedom of navigation for ships and aircraft.
However, China argues it holds jurisdiction over the area because it considers Taiwan part of its territory.
The dispute remains one of the most sensitive issues in global geopolitics. Beijing insists the Taiwan question is an internal matter and a core national interest. Taiwan’s government rejects those claims, maintaining that only the island’s population can determine its political future.
With tensions already high in the region, the latest Taiwan Strait transit underscores the delicate balance between military signaling and diplomacy as the United States and China attempt to stabilize relations ahead of the upcoming presidential visit.
