Rivers Assembly impeachment proceedings have officially begun against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh. The move follows allegations of gross misconduct, with lawmakers claiming the pair violated the Nigerian Constitution.
During Thursday’s plenary, Speaker Martins Amaewhule presided as Majority Leader Major Jack read the notice of allegations against Fubara. The document was signed by 26 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Amaewhule confirmed the notice will be formally served to the governor within seven days.
Deputy Majority Leader Linda Stewart also read out allegations against Deputy Governor Oduh, signaling that both top officials face simultaneous scrutiny. The Assembly’s actions mark a serious escalation in the state’s political landscape, highlighting tensions between lawmakers and the executive.
The development comes amid rising political debate in Rivers State, with legal and constitutional experts expected to weigh in on the legitimacy and next steps of the impeachment process.
The Assembly’s next move will set the tone for potential removal proceedings, with both Fubara and Oduh under close public and political watch in the coming days.
