Rivers APC rejects impeachment moves against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, warning that the process could destabilize governance in the state. The party described the impeachment bid initiated in the Rivers State House of Assembly as untenable and politically dangerous. The stance was announced as tensions escalated within the legislature in Port Harcourt.
The Rivers State House of Assembly had formally commenced impeachment proceedings, with Speaker Martins Amaewhule accusing Governor Fubara of gross misconduct and describing his emergence as a mistake. The development sparked immediate political reactions across the state, raising concerns over governance stability and party unity.
In a strongly worded statement signed by APC spokesperson Darlington Nwauju, the party leadership acknowledged the constitutional independence of the legislature. However, it insisted that impeachment at this time was unjustified and harmful. The APC said it could not remain silent while internal disputes were allowed to threaten an elected government.
The party argued that the impeachment threat is linked largely to budgetary disagreements. It recalled that during the emergency rule period, a ₦1.485 trillion budget was transmitted to the National Assembly in May 2025 and approved by both chambers by July 2025. According to the APC, the budget is valid until August 2026, and the governor is not under pressure to present a supplementary budget if satisfied with its structure.
Rivers APC rejects impeachment narratives it says are rooted in unresolved political conflicts inherited from previous party struggles. The party warned that allowing such disputes to resurface would undermine democratic stability and governance progress in the state.
The APC leadership urged lawmakers, especially its own members, to resist external pressures aimed at destabilizing the Fubara-led administration. It stressed that Rivers State is governed by the APC and pledged to take all necessary steps to protect the government from internal sabotage.
The party further called for the immediate discontinuation of the impeachment process, warning that it could damage the APC’s image nationally and stall development efforts in Rivers State. It emphasized the need for democratic conduct over political confrontation.
Rivers APC rejects impeachment as a path forward and appealed for calm, unity, and respect for constitutional governance. The party concluded by urging legislators to preserve democracy and avoid actions that could plunge the state into avoidable political turmoil.
