Burning of traditional worshipper’s house in Ilorin has triggered police arrests and a full criminal investigation, Kwara State authorities confirmed on Saturday. Three suspects are now in custody following the fire that destroyed a residential building in the Isale Koko area of the state capital.
Police said the incident was officially reported on January 2, 2026, when the occupant, Mrs. T. A. Olorisha, approached officers at the C Division, Oja Oba. She told investigators her house was set on fire the previous evening while she was away.
According to the police, the blaze broke out around 7pm on January 1 and completely razed the building. No injuries or fatalities were recorded, as no one was inside the house at the time. The extent of property damage is still being assessed.
The Kwara State Police Command said preliminary findings point to suspected arson, with possible links to religious tensions. Mrs. Olorisha, identified as a traditional worshipper, alleged she had received threats months earlier over her religious beliefs.
Police named three individuals — Alhaji Salihu Saka, 63; Alhaji Abubakar Salihu, 58; and Alhaji Yekini Olohuntele, 67 — as suspects connected to the threats. All three are currently being detained and questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police spokesperson SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi said the command became aware of the case after a video surfaced online showing an elderly woman describing how her home was destroyed by fire. She said detectives are treating the matter with urgency.
The command assured residents that efforts are underway to identify and arrest any other persons involved. Officers stressed that every allegation is being thoroughly examined to establish motive and responsibility.
Police also reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives, property, and fundamental rights, regardless of religious or cultural beliefs. Residents were urged to remain calm and assist investigators by providing credible information.
The case has heightened concerns about religious tolerance and communal harmony in the state as authorities work to prevent further escalation.
