Edo medical doctor kidnapping has ended with the release of Dr. Ibrahim Tahir after his family paid a N50 million ransom to armed abductors in Edo State.
The doctor was kidnapped on January 2 alongside his younger brother at their home on City Pride Road, Igbira Camp, Auchi, while opening their compound gate. The incident triggered days of fear and frantic negotiations, ending in tragedy and relief.
According to the family, the kidnappers killed the younger brother and dumped his body near Orley River, Down City Pride Road, on January 5. Dr. Tahir remained in captivity as demands escalated, forcing relatives and supporters into a desperate fundraising effort.
The victim’s father disclosed that the ransom was paid in two installments of N20 million and N30 million. Dr. Tahir was released around 8 a.m. on Wednesday. He sustained a gunshot injury to his leg during the ordeal and is currently receiving medical treatment.
He explained that donations from family members, non-governmental organisations, friends, and well-wishers made the payment possible. Vigilantes and local hunters reportedly mounted pressure on the kidnappers before the release, with reports that one of the abductors was injured during an ambush attempt.
“My son has been released, but I lost another son,” the grieving father said, confirming the emotional toll on the family.
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the doctor’s release on Thursday. Police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem said authorities were aware of the development and acknowledged the victim’s freedom.
The case has renewed concerns over rising kidnappings in Edo North, particularly around Auchi, where residents continue to call for stronger security patrols, intelligence-led operations, and swift justice for perpetrators.
As investigations continue, the family is focusing on recovery, mourning their loss, and ensuring the doctor’s full medical stabilization.
