Ringleader of North-East suicide bombings identified by the Nigerian military has been named as Shariff Umar, also known as Yusuf, who allegedly coordinated recent deadly attacks, including the December 24 bombing at Gamboru Market Mosque in Maiduguri.
The breakthrough followed intelligence-led operations by the Joint Task Force North East under Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK). On December 31, 2025, troops conducted cordon-and-search operations in Maiduguri’s Kalmari area, arresting 14 suspects linked to suicide bombing activities.
Military Media Officer Lt. Col. Sani Uba said investigations revealed the structure and operational roles within the terror cell. A detained suspect, Ibrahim Muhammad, directly implicated Umar as the ringleader responsible for recruiting, training, and deploying suicide bombers, as well as coordinating logistics and IED delivery.
“Shariff Umar personally coordinated the attack at Gamboru Market Mosque, during which his accomplice detonated a suicide vest,” the military statement said. Umar was also tied to a foiled bombing attempt in Damaturu, Yobe State.
Further investigations uncovered additional links, including alleged involvement of Umar’s wife, Yagana Modu, and corroboration from his stepdaughter, Amina, who confirmed seeing a suspect bomber at their residence. All suspects remain in custody for intensive questioning.
Lt. Col. Uba emphasized that dismantling the network remains a priority, with security forces working to identify collaborators and recover any remaining explosives. He urged residents to support anti-terror operations, noting that terrorist networks often exploit silence or misplaced loyalty within communities.
“Timely information from law-abiding citizens remains one of the most powerful tools in preventing attacks and saving innocent lives,” he said.
The operation marks a critical step in curbing the wave of suicide bombings terrorizing North-East Nigeria and demonstrates the importance of intelligence-driven security measures in the region.
