A senior Kano State Government official has claimed that political stakeholders and voters in the state have agreed that Rabiu Kwankwaso and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf should defect to the All Progressives Congress. The claim comes amid rising speculation over possible realignments ahead of future elections.
Abdullahi Rogo, Director-General of the Protocol Directorate at the Kano State Government House, made the assertion in a viral video circulated on Sunday. He said the decision followed consultations involving key figures within the Kwankwasiyya political structure.
According to Rogo, discussions were held with the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly and other influential members of the movement. He said the outcome of those talks was a consensus that both the former governor and the sitting governor should move from the New Nigeria People’s Party to the APC.
Rogo claimed the push reflects the mood of Kano voters and party loyalists who believe aligning with the ruling party at the federal level would better serve the state’s interests. He described the proposed defection as a strategic step aimed at strengthening Kano’s political relevance nationally.
Kwankwaso, a former governor and NNPP presidential candidate, remains the most influential figure in Kano politics. Governor Yusuf, his close ally, rode on the Kwankwasiyya platform to victory in the 2023 governorship election, ending APC’s control of the state.
Neither Kwankwaso nor Governor Yusuf has publicly confirmed any plan to defect. The NNPP leadership has also not responded to the claim. Political analysts say any such move would have major implications for party dynamics in Kano and the North-West.
The APC has been quietly expanding efforts to woo opposition figures as internal realignments intensify nationwide. Kano, with its large voter base, remains a critical battleground.
For now, Rogo’s statement has fueled speculation, with observers watching closely for official confirmation or denial from the principals involved.
