The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Ajibola Basiru, has urged the people of Rivers State to fully support President Bola Tinubu and Governor Siminalayi Fubara in the 2027 general elections. His call comes amid lingering controversy over Fubara’s political future following the state’s prolonged power struggle.
Basiru made the appeal on Monday in Port Harcourt during the inauguration of the newly completed Permanent Secretaries’ Quarters at Elimgbu in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area. He praised the governor’s performance, describing ongoing projects and service delivery as evidence of effective APC-style governance.
The Rivers political climate has remained tense since the rift between Fubara and his predecessor, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike. Although President Tinubu reportedly brokered a peace deal between both camps, reports later emerged that part of the agreement barred Fubara from seeking re-election in 2027. Basiru’s comments, however, appeared to signal renewed political backing for the governor.
Addressing residents, the APC national scribe described Rivers as a model of the party’s people-focused leadership. He said the state had become the first in the South-South region to be fully under APC control, urging voters to consolidate that position by supporting the party at all levels.
Basiru said the inclusion of Fubara into the APC had strengthened the party’s national spread, adding that the South-South now joins other regions under APC leadership. He credited Tinubu’s leadership style for the party’s expansion, describing the president as a leader driven by national interest rather than ethnic sentiment.
Turning to the housing project, Basiru said the provision of official quarters for Permanent Secretaries would improve productivity and accountability in the civil service. He noted that better welfare reduces the temptation for unethical practices and strengthens loyalty to the state.
He told Rivers residents that sustained performance by the governor reflects positively on the APC, urging voters to reward the party with massive support during future elections.
In his remarks, Governor Fubara said the housing scheme was designed to improve the well-being, security and efficiency of senior civil servants. He explained that stable accommodation would enhance decision-making and institutional continuity within the public service.
The governor assured that similar welfare initiatives would be extended to other categories of workers, while directing that the facility be properly managed and maintained.
The project was inaugurated by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Dr Didi Esther Walson-Jack, who described the estate as a long-term investment in governance stability. The housing complex consists of 29 modern units with advanced security, power, water and recreational facilities.
