Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu has dismissed suggestions of pressure ahead of Nigeria’s opening match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, insisting the team remains calm and focused before Tuesday’s clash with Tanzania.
The Trabzonspor forward, who has enjoyed an impressive season in Turkey, is joint top scorer in the Turkish Super Lig with 11 goals, a run of form that earned him a recall to the national team. Despite growing expectations around his return, Onuachu said the atmosphere within the camp remains relaxed.
Speaking on the team’s preparations, the striker noted that training routines with the national team are largely similar to what players experience at club level, especially in the days leading up to a match. He explained that sessions typically involve light training, set-piece drills and tactical work, adding that there is no unusual buildup to the Tanzania encounter.
Onuachu also played down talk of pressure arising from media attention and fan expectations, describing it as a normal part of football. He said players are accustomed to scrutiny and public opinion, stressing that praise and criticism are both part of the game.
According to the forward, positive performances naturally attract compliments, while poor outings often come with criticism meant to push players to improve. He maintained that none of that weighs heavily on him, as his focus remains on doing his job on the pitch.
Nigeria, runners-up at the last AFCON, will be aiming for a strong start in Group C when they face Tanzania in Morocco. Onuachu is expected to play a key role in attack, offering experience, physical presence and goal-scoring threat to the Super Eagles.
With confidence high within the squad, Nigeria will be hoping their preparation and depth translate into a winning start as they begin their quest for a fourth continental title.
