The National Identity Management Commission has launched a new digital Pre-Enrolment Portal designed to simplify and speed up the National Identification Number registration process across Nigeria and the diaspora. The platform allows applicants to complete key steps online before visiting enrolment centres for biometric capture.
The initiative, unveiled on Friday, is aimed at reducing long queues, easing congestion, and improving overall efficiency at NIN enrolment locations nationwide. It marks a major shift toward digital-first public service delivery in Nigeria’s identity management system.
Through the portal, applicants can capture and submit their personal biodata online at their convenience. Once completed, they only need to visit an enrolment centre for fingerprint and facial capture, significantly cutting down physical processing time.
NIMC said the move forms part of its broader strategy to modernise operations and improve user experience. The commission noted that congestion at enrolment centres has long been a challenge, especially during peak registration periods.
In a statement, NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, said the portal reflects the leadership’s commitment to improving institutional performance through technology. He linked the initiative to the vision of the Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, who has prioritised digital solutions to strengthen service delivery.
According to the commission, the portal also aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places emphasis on efficient governance, digital transformation, and inclusive national development.
Adegoke outlined several benefits of the new system, including simplified enrolment through online data capture, reduced waiting time via appointment scheduling, and improved data accuracy since applicants input their information directly. He added that enhanced security features ensure confidential handling of personal data.
Other advantages include the ability to upload required supporting documents online, smoother processing at enrolment centres, and improved operational effectiveness for NIMC staff. The commission said these improvements are expected to increase enrolment accuracy and boost public confidence in the national identity system.
NIMC encouraged all prospective applicants, both within Nigeria and abroad, to take advantage of the portal for a faster and more convenient registration experience. Officials described the platform as a key step toward building a reliable and sustainable digital identity ecosystem that supports governance, security, and economic planning.
Applicants were advised to access the Pre-Enrolment Portal through penrol.nimc.gov.ng and complete their biodata submission before visiting any enrolment centre.
