Nigerian Exchange (NGX) ends 2025 on a high, delivering a stellar 51.19% annual return, the strongest full-year performance since 2007. The rally was fueled by a December gain of 8.43%, pushing total market capitalization to N99.3 trillion.
The All-Share Index (ASI) closed the year at 155,613.03 points, its highest level ever, supported by broad-based gains across consumer goods, insurance, and industrial sectors. July was the standout month, with a 16.57% gain that drove Q3 returns to 18.95%, the year’s best quarterly performance.
Consumer goods stocks led the charge with a remarkable 129.57% return. Guinness Nigeria topped the list with +398.08%, followed by Vitafoam (+300%), Champion Breweries (+267.45%), Honeywell Flour Mills (+247.62%), and NASCON Allied Industries (+242.90%). Cadbury Nigeria (+178.60%) and Unilever Nigeria (+118.51%) also contributed to sector strength.
Insurance recorded a 65.64% gain, boosted by the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA 2025). Key performers included Sovereign Trust Insurance (+241.07%), AIICO Insurance (+165.03%), and NEM Insurance (+144.75%). Industrial goods followed with 58.91% growth, led by Beta Glass (+470.11%), Berger Paints (+140%), and BUA Cement (+91.94%).
Banking stocks posted 39.77% growth despite mid-year CBN directives, with Wema Bank (+128.75%), Stanbic IBTC (+73.61%), and GTCO (+59.12%) driving returns. Oil and gas remained the laggard, dropping 1.54%, though Eterna (+40.12%) and Aradel (+12.04%) offered modest relief.
Analysts say the 2025 rally reflects renewed investor confidence, a more resilient market structure, and the impact of key policy reforms. The broad-based gains suggest improved corporate performance, easing forex pressures, and greater retail participation ahead of 2026.
Historically, 2025 ranks as the best performance in nearly 18 years, second only to 2007 (+74.74%), and well below the record 130.94% gain of 1995. With momentum high, investors will watch earnings growth, interest rates, FX stability, and reform follow-through closely in 2026.
