Popular Nigerian content creator and singer, Nasboi, has opened up about his humble beginnings, revealing that he had nothing six years ago and often had to beg for iPhones to create comedy skits.
Nasboi, whose real name is Lawal Michael Nasiru Bolaji, shared the reflection in a post on X on Monday, where he expressed gratitude to God for how far his journey in the entertainment industry has come. According to the entertainer, his rise to fame is a testament to perseverance and divine favour rather than sheer talent alone.
“Six years ago I had nothing. I would beg for an iPhone to make skits. Thank you God. I’m not the most talented but you chose me,” he wrote.
The Osun State-born entertainer, now 33, initially ventured into the music industry before transitioning into comedy after facing several challenges. His breakthrough came when he began posting short, humorous skits on Instagram, many of which featured his now-famous imitation of Afrobeats star Davido. The skits quickly went viral, earning him widespread attention and the nickname “Low Budget OBO.”
Nasboi’s ability to connect with everyday experiences and present them humorously resonated strongly with social media audiences, helping him build a loyal fan base and establish himself as one of Nigeria’s leading online comedians.
After achieving success in comedy, Nasboi returned to his original passion for music. His music career gained renewed momentum in 2023 with the release of his hit single “Umbrella” featuring Wande Coal. The song became a major success, dominating airwaves and inspiring a viral dance and sing-along challenge across social media platforms.
Over the years, Nasboi has evolved into a multifaceted entertainer, balancing comedy, music, and brand collaborations while remaining vocal about his journey and the struggles that shaped him. His recent reflection has drawn praise from fans and fellow creatives, many of whom see his story as a source of motivation for aspiring entertainers.
Nasboi’s rise from borrowing phones to becoming a recognised name in Nigeria’s entertainment industry underscores the power of consistency, adaptability, and faith in achieving long-term success.
