Lagos State University has moved to regulate content creation on its campuses after a viral prank video showing fake bandits triggered fear and disrupted normal activities. The university warned students, staff, and the public against using its facilities for skits or videos without official approval.
The action follows the circulation of a video titled “Bandits Prank on Lasuites,” uploaded on December 5, 2025, by Datreez Entertainment TV. The skit featured individuals dressed as armed bandits roaming parts of the LASU campus, deliberately provoking panic and alarm among unsuspecting students.
In a statement released on Friday, the university distanced itself from the content and condemned its production. The statement was signed by the Deputy Registrar and Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile.
LASU said the prank created unnecessary fear and undermined the sense of safety on campus. Management noted that the timing was especially troubling given Nigeria’s ongoing national security challenges, where reports of banditry and violent attacks remain a sensitive issue.
The university expressed concern over what it described as the growing, unauthorised use of campus spaces for content creation. It said some skits and videos produced on university grounds misrepresent LASU’s values and expose the institution to reputational damage.
While acknowledging creativity among young people, the university stressed that freedom of expression must be exercised responsibly. It warned that offensive or misleading content could erode public trust and weaken LASU’s standing as a centre for academic excellence and character development.
In response, LASU announced new regulations governing all forms of content creation within its premises. The university said anyone seeking to shoot or record videos on campus must now obtain prior approval from its Centre for Information and Public Relations.
The directive applies to students, staff, and members of the general public. It covers a wide range of activities, including skits, vox pops, short films, promotional videos, and any other audiovisual productions.
The university clarified that the approval requirement extends to all campuses, hostels, and associated facilities. Management said the measure is intended to protect the safety of the university community and preserve the institution’s image.
LASU urged content creators to respect institutional rules and consider the wider consequences of their actions. It warned that failure to comply with the new guidelines could attract disciplinary or other appropriate sanctions.
The university said it remains open to creative and educational projects but insisted that all such activities must follow established procedures to ensure safety, accountability, and respect for the campus environment.
