Bhutan is making a bold move, pledging $1 billion in cryptocurrency to build a “Mindfulness City” near its Indian border. The Himalayan kingdom hopes the project will attract foreign investment and give its economy a fresh boost.
The plan centers on Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), a special economic zone designed to blend business with Bhutan’s Buddhist heritage. The city aims to be a hub for sustainable and conscious enterprises, reflecting the nation’s famed “Gross National Happiness” philosophy.
King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck confirmed the cryptocurrency allocation on the country’s national day. “I must ensure that every Bhutanese is a custodian, stakeholder, and beneficiary of GMC,” the king said, announcing up to 10,000 bitcoins—worth roughly $1 billion. The commitment is intended to support the nation’s youth and reverse migration trends caused by high unemployment.
Bhutan, squeezed between India and China, has struggled to provide jobs despite prioritizing well-being over growth. The government has turned to hydropower exports and domestic cryptocurrency mining, leveraging cheap electricity to generate revenue and build its crypto holdings. Druk Holding and Investments (DHI), the state investment firm, poured $539 million—nearly 20% of GDP—into cryptocurrency operations between 2021 and 2022.
The new Mindfulness City project marks a continuation of Bhutan’s dual approach: blending modern economic initiatives with its cultural and spiritual traditions. Officials hope the city will attract businesses and tourists while creating local jobs, giving the nation a sustainable economic lifeline.
Analysts say the move could position Bhutan as a niche financial and cultural hub in the region. While the exact value of its crypto reserves remains undisclosed, the kingdom’s gamble on digital assets highlights its willingness to experiment with unconventional economic solutions.
Bhutan’s Gelephu Mindfulness City is expected to set a unique precedent, merging spirituality with blockchain-backed investment to chart a new path for Himalayan prosperity.
