Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has sworn in Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, as the substantive Chairman of Agege Local Government Area. The ceremony marked the formal transition of leadership at the council following months of acting administration. The development has drawn attention due to the family and political ties involved.
Obasa’s emergence followed a chain of events that began earlier in the year. He was initially sworn in as Vice-Chairman on July 27, 2025, alongside the former chairman, Tunde Azeez. When Azeez proceeded on medical leave, Obasa took over as acting chairman to ensure continuity in council administration.
The leadership change became permanent after Azeez formally resigned on November 5, 2025, citing prolonged health challenges. His resignation cleared the way for Obasa’s confirmation as substantive chairman in line with local government procedures.
At the swearing-in ceremony, Governor Sanwo-Olu urged the new chairman to prioritise unity, inclusion and service delivery. He reminded Obasa that leadership in Lagos is built on reforms, accountability and responsiveness to the needs of residents. The governor charged him to be fair, humane and proactive in advancing development at the grassroots.
The Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Bolaji Robert, described the inauguration as a renewed call to public service. He said the new chairman must demonstrate dedication and selflessness in addressing the needs of Agege residents.
In his acceptance remarks, Obasa pledged to focus on sustainable development and transparent governance. He revealed that 15 road and drainage projects are currently ongoing across the local government. He also disclosed that 14 public schools are undergoing renovation to improve learning conditions.
Obasa further announced the deployment of 10 health booths across communities in Agege to expand access to basic healthcare services. He said the initiative is aimed at bringing medical care closer to residents, particularly in densely populated areas.
At the same event, Governor Sanwo-Olu also swore in Mrs. Toyin Anjous-Ademuyiwa as Permanent Secretary in the Office of Transformation, Creativity and Innovation, reinforcing the administration’s focus on institutional reforms.
